Three girls have been accused of trying to push another girl off of a cliff. The article makes it sound as if this girl's real crime against these others was simply because she's a lesbian.
One of these girls is a juvenile and so has not been named in the media. This girl was acquitted by a judge whom allegedly didn't bother to hear the other side, to hear WHY these charges were brought against her.
I'm a little shocked about this, to be honest. I understand that the juvenile court system is a joke, anyway, when it comes to serious crimes. But, considering the crime that this girl has been charged with, I can't imagine why the judge should just acquit her so easily. She might've been a juvenile at the time, but that doesn't give her a free pass to attempt to murder someone for any reason.
I hope that these other two girls don't get off so easily when they go before a judge. This is a very serious crime. It should not be treated so casually.

The other two girls that were charged with the crime were acquitted. This article tells more about it, but really without seeing the cell phone video for myself I can't say whether I think the story is credible.
The defense is saying that it was just a prank and Cheyenne Williams was in on the prank, but it made her late for a job interview so she made up the hate crime story. And that she recorded the whole thing on her cell phone, and though the three girls can be heard yelling homophobic slurs, that Williams herself can be heard laughing.
First of all, I think it's a lot of trouble for her to go through -- and to cause -- in order to have an excuse for her tardiness.
I can see why she might have been laughing for a while. Maybe she thought that what was happening couldn't possibly be more than a joke until the girls showed her how serious they were.
But, either way, I can't tell without having seen the video myself and as far as I know it hasn't been released for public viewing or been leaked to YouTube or something, as often happens.
However, if what the mother of Cheyenne Williams says is true, her daughter has been having nightmares about the incident and is very disturbed by it. THAT doesn't sound like the reaction one has to a simple "prank" to me. At all.
But, I guess until and unless anything more comes out of this from the accused or Williams or her family, or that video gets released or leaked somehow, we just aren't going to know for sure.
